About the Eerste Divisie
The Eerste Divisie stuffs Friday nights with high-scoring fixtures across provincial stadiums and Jong squads. Four \"period\" races keep mid-table clubs playing for hardware even when automatic promotion feels distant.
- Average goals exceed 3.0, so keeper form and xG trends matter more here than in most leagues.
- Clubs such as NAC Breda, Willem II and Roda JC draw Eredivisie-level crowds chasing a quick return.
- Academy-heavy sides from Ajax, PSV and AZ inject pacey prospects who raise pressing intensity.

Eerste Divisie FAQ
How does Eerste Divisie promotion work?
The champion earns automatic promotion to the Eredivisie. Period winners and the best overall clubs head into multi-round play-offs with Eredivisie sides for the remaining spots.
What are period titles?
The schedule is divided into four blocks of matches. The club with the best record in each block secures a spot in the promotion play-offs, even if they finish mid-table overall.
Is relegation automatic?
No. Relegation only occurs if the Tweede Divisie champion meets KNVB licensing standards, in which case the lowest eligible Eerste Divisie club faces a play-off to stay up.
